Different problems need different equipment. Hardness is handled by a softener. Iron may need a dedicated iron filter depending on its form and concentration. Sediment needs filtration ahead of everything else. Taste and odor issues are often carbon. Bacteria is a separate question again, and it matters more on private wells, which are common outside the city limits in the surrounding counties.
The right system depends on what is in your water and how much water the household or building actually uses. Oversizing wastes money and undersizing means the equipment cannot keep up, so this is a sizing exercise, not a catalog choice.
