Drain Cleaning and Drain Repair

A slow drain is a warning. A backed up drain is the same problem after it has been ignored for a while. Brenneco clears drains and, more usefully, works out why it happened.

Slow, then stopped

Almost no drain fails suddenly. Kitchen lines narrow gradually as grease cools and coats the inside of the pipe, catching everything that comes after it. Bathroom lines collect hair and soap. Laundry lines collect lint. By the time a drain actually stops, the pipe has usually been running at a fraction of its capacity for months.

That is why the useful question is not only how to clear it, but what the drain looked like inside once it was cleared. A line that is clean after cabling is a different situation from a line that is scaled, bellied, root intruded or partially collapsed, and those two situations have very different futures.

A sink drain, the fixture end of a system that runs a long way underground

Signs the problem is further down

One slow fixture is usually a local problem. Several fixtures slowing at once, gurgling in a tub when a toilet flushes, a floor drain that backs up when the washing machine drains, or water appearing at the lowest fixture in the house all point at the main line rather than at any one fixture. That is a different job, and treating it like a sink clog wastes time.

Older neighborhoods around Lafayette and West Lafayette have plenty of original clay and cast iron underground, and both have characteristic failure modes. Clay joints let roots in. Cast iron scales and eventually loses its bottom. Neither gets solved with a bottle of drain chemical.

How Brenneco approaches it

Clear the blockage, then determine what caused it, then tell you plainly which category you are in. Sometimes the answer is that it was a one off and the line is fine. Sometimes the answer is that the line will do this again in six months unless something changes. Either answer is more useful than a cleared drain and no explanation.

For drains that keep coming back, a cleanout and inspection on the sewer line is usually the next step, because a repeating problem is rarely about the fixture.

Questions about drain services

Are chemical drain cleaners a bad idea?

They are hard on older pipe, they often only bore a hole through the blockage rather than removing it, and they make the line unpleasant to work on afterward. Mechanical clearing is the better path.

Why does my tub gurgle when the toilet flushes?

That usually means air is being pulled through the trap because the main line or the vent is restricted, not because the tub has a problem.

Do you handle commercial drains?

Yes. Brenneco serves commercial and industrial customers, including kitchen and floor drain systems.

The drain cleared but came back in a month. Why?

That pattern usually means the blockage was a symptom. The line itself needs to be looked at rather than cleared again.
