Water Softeners and Whole House Filters

A softener or filter is only as good as its sizing and its service. Brenneco installs and services both, for homes on city water and homes on wells across the surrounding counties.

Sizing is the whole job

A softener is rated by how much hardness it can remove between regenerations. That means the correct unit depends on two numbers: the hardness of the incoming water, and how much water the household actually uses. Get either one wrong and the unit either regenerates constantly, wasting salt and water, or falls behind and lets hard water through at the worst times.

This is why a softener is not a shelf purchase. Water in Lafayette is not the same as water on a well outside Delphi or Remington, and a family of five does not use water like a couple does.

Clean water at the tap is the point of the whole system

Filtration ahead of the softener

Sediment will foul a softener bed, so where sediment is present it gets filtered first. Iron in certain forms will also foul a softener, which is why an iron filter sometimes belongs upstream rather than relying on the softener to handle everything. Carbon addresses taste, odor and chlorine on municipal supplies.

The order these components go in matters as much as which ones are chosen. A correctly staged system protects the expensive parts of itself.

Service is not optional

Softeners need salt, and the brine tank needs occasional attention to prevent bridging, where a crust forms over an empty cavity and the unit stops regenerating properly while the tank still looks full. Filters need cartridge or media changes on a schedule. Control valves eventually need service.

Brenneco installs and services this equipment, which means the crew that sized and installed the system is the crew that knows it when it needs attention. All technicians are trained and licensed.

City water and well water are different problems

On municipal water in Lafayette and West Lafayette, the usual complaints are hardness, scale and chlorine taste. The supply is treated and monitored before it reaches the house, so the work is about polishing what arrives.

On a private well, which is common once you get out into the surrounding counties, nothing has been done to the water before it enters the building. Hardness, iron, sediment, sulfur odor and bacteria are all live questions, and they have to be measured rather than assumed. The same brand of softener can be exactly right on one property and completely wrong two miles away.

Questions about water softeners and filters

How do I know how hard my water is?

It gets tested. On municipal water the utility publishes figures, but on a well it has to be measured, and iron and sediment have to be measured separately from hardness.

How much salt should a softener use?

That depends on hardness, water use and how the unit is programmed. A unit burning through salt unusually fast is usually a programming or sizing symptom.

Can I put a softener in myself?

Physically it is plumbing work. The part that goes wrong is sizing, staging and programming, which is where most owner installed systems underperform.

Do you service systems you did not install?

Brenneco services water treatment equipment as part of its normal work. Call and describe what you have.
